Our History

The history of Taylor Street Missionary Church is the story of a journey that began with a small group of people who shared a vision. A vision to step out on faith to establish and organize a place of worship. This group of people met in the home of Reverend Wesley P. Adams, Sr., and at that time they elected him to become their leader through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Under the leadership of Rev. Adams, the church was formed in 1972. The organizing members were: Rev. Wesley P. Adams, Sr., Rose Lee Adams, Charles Brown, Ruth Brown, Alfred Mays, Ida Mays, Morris Adams, Myrtle Adams, Annie Mae, Henrietta Adams, Dexter Brown, and Wesley Adams, Jr. The members chose the name, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Some of the first services were held in a building that was known as the United Christian Center located on Nogales Street. In the later years, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church had services in a church building owned by a minister by the name of Reverend Smith. That building was located at 700 Morrison Avenue.

In 1974 the members found a building that they would purchase to call their own. The building was located at 3469 Taylor Street Sacramento, Ca 95838. The building was actually a house and after purchasing the house, some reconstruction was done to make this house into a church home.

The time came when the church needed to be officially a corporation and the process began. However during that time an obstacle was presented and the church could not be organized under the name of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, they would have to choose a different name and it was decided that since the building was located on Taylor Street, why not give the church that name. And so it was, the new name upon being incorporated would become Taylor Street Missionary Baptist Church.

The building at 3489 Taylor Street over the years underwent several reconstructions. As founding Pastor of Taylor Street, it was the dream and goal of Rev. Adams along with the members to build a new place of worship. While members were graciously content with how God had blessed over the years, they still prayed and worked toward a new building. Over the years the membership grew and there were times when it fell off, but there still remained a “faithful few” who by the grace of God was determined to strive for the advancement of God’s ministry. Many sacrifices were made by the members over the years

On December 11, 1993, Rev. Wesley P. Adams, who was the pastor of the church for twenty one years was called from labor to reward, While the church had lost its founding pastor, the grace of God kept them steadfast and unmovable, continuing in prayer toward their visions.

Rev. Wilfert Williams, the Assistant Pastor of Taylor Street was given the torch to continue his part in the vision. In February 1994, Rev. Williams was inaugurated as Pastor of the Taylor Street Missionary Baptist Church. With the membership continuing to grow under his leadership, the quest became more imbedded in the minds of everyone to build or purchase a larger place of worship. In 1995 Pastor Williams and the members after prayerful consideration decided to relocate and purchase a new building. On November 11, 1995 the members marched a few blocks to our new church presently located at 3913 Taylor Street with the same faith in God as members who founded Taylor Street Missionary Baptist Church years before.

On May 2005 Pastor Wilfert William announced his retirement and moved back to his home town in Louisiana and Rev. Wince Batton at that time was our Assistant Pastor became the Pastor of Taylor Street Missionary Baptist Church. Under Pastor Batton’s leadership several ministers and deacons have been ordained, the church has had a few remodeling projects, Pastor Batton has grown the Christian Education Department and Taylor Street is still growing and moving forward in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

On August 2, 2015, Pastor Batton announced his retirement.

December 18, 2018, Because we continued to stand on the promises of God the Lord provided us with a new Pastor,  Rev. Kenneth R. Wimberly Sr.
